PROLOGUE

Palace Court of
His Excellency

Duke Francesco
di Gonzaga.

1607
Mantua, Italy

I greet you, great
Gonzagas, of noble
rank and birth...

Your worthy deeds
are lauded in all
nations of the earth.

I am Music! I yield
solace with my
poesy and lyre...

...and shall the coldest
heart inflame with
ardent passion’s fire.

My golden harp, my
melody arouse
men’s souls to see...

...the courts of
Paradise, to hear
celestial harmony.

Now sing I of Orfeo,
to whose voice wild
beasts did throng...

...and e’en the gates
of Hades came
open to his song.

With Pindar’s and
with Homer’s doth
his poesy belong.

Now list ye to my
music, be it or
sad or gay;

Hush, birds! Cease
babbling, River! Ye
Breezes, fly away!
